14. The Monday Break(Through) 008 - Giving Up… and Coming Back

Hey everyone and welcome to another episode of the Monday Break(Through).

Last year, I made a decision—and it was a big one. I decided to step away from designing hand-drawn fonts. It really wasn’t easy to admit, but after countless hours of frustration, feeling like I was wrestling with my own creativity, it just felt necessary. I told myself—and all of you—that it was time to let go, to stop pushing myself in a direction that no longer felt fulfilling.

And at the time, it really felt like the right move. It gave me the freedom to focus on other ideas, to explore new creative directions, and to rediscover the joy of designing without that constant weight of expectation.

But there’s this weird thing about creativity—it’s rarely a straight line. It loops, twists, and sometimes circles back to the very things we thought we’d left behind.

Over the past few months, The Type Convo podcast has given me the chance to connect with some incredible creatives. And hearing their stories, their struggles, and their passions reignited something in me. I realized that what I thought was a closed door wasn’t really closed at all—it was just waiting for me to come back when I was ready.

In reality, hand-drawn fonts were never really the problem. The problem was the pressure I put on myself to create something “perfect.” I’d forgotten the joy of simply sitting down with a pen and letting the ink flow. I’d forgotten that the beauty of hand-drawn work isn’t in its perfection—it’s actually in the opposite, in the little quirks and strokes that make it unique.

And so, I’ve been quietly working on something new. A hand-drawn font that feels different. It feels… lighter, even though it’s bold. It feels freer. It feels like me rediscovering why I fell in love with this craft in the first place.

And I am really excited to announce the release of that font later this week. It’s a reminder to myself—and maybe to you as well—that giving up doesn’t always mean forever. Sometimes, it’s okay to step away, to take a break, to let go of the pressure and just come back when you’re ready.

Because when you do, you might find that the thing you thought you were leaving behind still holds something magical.

So, what I’ve learned is that: Quitting isn’t always the end. Sometimes, it’s just part of the process.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for listening and for being part of this journey with me. I’d love to hear your thoughts—have you ever quit something only to come back to it later with fresh eyes? What did that experience teach you?

Let me know in the comments or send me a message. And as always, thank you for your support—it means the world.

See you next week!
